About JLPT
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is designed to evaluate and certify the Japanese language proficiency of non-native speakers of Japanese. The JLPT is the largest Japanese-language test in the world. Use of JLPT results has expanded from skill measurement to include employment screening and evaluating for promotion and pay raises. The JLPT has five levels (N1, N2, N3, N4, and N5) measuring Japanese-language communicative competence through three elements: 1) “Language knowledge” to measure knowledge of Japanese vocabulary and grammar, and 2) “Reading” and 3) “Listening” to measure ability to use the knowledge in actual communication. The JLPT does not include to measure speaking or writing proficiency directly.| Old Test | New Test |
